If you’re wondering whether you should email an agent without a referral… the answer is yes. But it has to be done right.
Agents are busy, but they’re also always scouting for new talent. If you present yourself clearly and confidently, you’re giving them exactly what they want. Think about what kind of emails they receive on a daily basis – clients and casting directors. Do you think they sound desperate in their emails?
Absolutely not!
They have an established relationship, so things are casual. So the question remains… how do you, a stranger, approach a cold email to an agent?
Here’s how:
- Make it personal. Reference something about their agency, a client you admire, or their niche (TV, voiceover, Broadway, etc.)
- Keep it short. Your email should fit on one screen — no life story needed.
- Include a strong link. Make it easy to view your headshot, resume, and reel, but you don’t need to overload them with links!
- Follow up. No response? Follow up with your career updates – big callbacks, booked jobs – Anything notable is worth
shooting a quick email to them.
